• Still Moving

Jean Bosphore describes Still Moving as a series of paintings that explore childhood memories, revealing aspects of his identity: where and how he grew up, as well as the influences that shaped his journey. The title, borrowed from a collaborative work by Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe, combines two ideas: Still, the still life, and Moving, the movement. The title Still Moving also suggests the idea of perpetual renewal and constant change.

Through several themes dear to him — the body, the Object, solitude, boredom, flowers — Jean Bosphore questions the link between still life and the dynamism of the moving body. This confusion raises questions: can the body become an object? How do these elements interact with each other? What do they tell us about the passage of time? These objects, fascinating and explored from all angles, demystify the body, which ceases to be the main subject. It is blended among the objects, one element among others in the composition, becoming a memory.

Still life acts as a memento mori, a reminder of ephemerality. The omnipresent flowers bring poetic softness while highlighting the fragility and mortality of the whole. Through this exploration, Jean Bosphore shows how our aesthetic evolves, how the Object becomes a marker of its time, while also suggesting that our bodies undergo this transformation too.

The swimming pool, the central point of this universe, embodies a space where he revisits his first memories of the body and the fascination it held for him. The first furtive observations at the pool, a commercial, a magazine, a poster – these are the threads that guide this exploration.

Time seems frozen in an endless summer, where the heat becomes almost tangible. Boredom blends with fulfillment, oscillating between laziness and excitement, between shadow and light. This atmosphere is reinforced by the architecture and spaces of a house bathed in summer light. From the garden to the bedroom, and through the pool, it’s an invitation to wander through the universe of his childhood.

This memory is punctuated by small photographs scattered throughout the space, creating a mise en abyme. They weave one story within another, offering several levels of interpretation. Beneath the apparent serenity of the image lies a more intimate and complex reflection, open to individual interpretation.

Jean Bosphore now seeks to imagine scenes that invite the viewer into the painting. Previously limited by format or a restricted point of view, he now offers a total immersion. By enlarging the format and stepping back from his subject, he opens the image, allowing for a more fluid and multifaceted reading. The viewer, absorbed by the scene, becomes a witness to the work, unable to detach themselves from it.

Between personal reminiscence and universal reflection, Still Moving offers a contemplative immersion, where each image, suspended in time, becomes a mirror of emotions and stories that pass through us.
